The Sanctuary
A sanctuary is a refuge or safety from persecution or danger. This sculpture stands outside the Low Secure Unit of Merseycare NHS, Liverpool, and symbolises the safety and hope that is offered by the staff. This is a sculpture to move through, to dwell within and to contemplate. The glass drawings are spontaneous moments of mark making in response to the trees which surround the site. Their delicate branches, made translucent and illuminated by the sun, contrast the security of the sturdy steel structure. This circular structure defines this contemporary location as standing stones define places of historic significance.
