The Rope Walk
The Rope Walk
Working as Heritage Architects, M+R set up a 'rope walk' and made hemp rope next to Percival
Lane in Runcorn - the exact location where rope for the shipping industry was made years ago.
The site is now a public park and, during the performance, pathways became worn in the grass
by repetitive walking back and forth - fragile lines which recall actions of the past.
The rope represents the historic trades of Runcorn via printed sailcloth intertwined within the
hemp. The machine used to produce the rope has been used in the Halton area for generations
and was restored by the artists for this project. This public performance is about memories and
discussions surrounding the past rather than a presentation of factual information. Walked paths
become rediscovered timelines.
