Streets of Gold
Streets of Gold
M+R installed 150 castings in Camberley as the centrepiece of a town regeneration project.
'Streets of Gold' reinterprets local stories, anecdotes and memories as surface textures; it turns
fragments of everyday conversation into permanent memorials. The surfaces are cast in bronze
and iron and, in both cases, react to peoples touch such that the artwork becomes polished over
time with different levels of shine according to different levels of interaction. Community
engagement was key in establishing personal stories which have become fragmented poetry that
can be read in numerous ways with multiple interpretations. The meaning or context is intentionally
unclear but conveys a positivity which stimulates people to gather and talk.
