Hierarchy

Hierarchy

'Hierarchy' hangs in Gunnersbury Mansion, London, in place of a chandelier that went missing in the early 1900s. The artwork was developed through community engagement, which explored the lives of both servants and gentry during the time when Princess Amelia was in residence and holding lavish society gatherings. Illuminated actors were digitally mapped to create light drawings which became the shape of the final artwork. The narrative evokes stories of the past and presents them as a way of questioning contemporary issues such as social mobility and the contrast between rich and poor. The transformation of a gentle line into a frenzy of activity represents the very different lives of those who have lived and worked at Gunnersbury.
